How will we introduce economy?
Most servers use the virtual currency as their standard currency, so players would be used to having virtual currency.
The problem is, though, that we have an item based economy, AND a virtual currency for donators. How would we explain?
I can see many people being upset because the virtual currency is donator money. How would we circumvent this?

Maybe bartering? Or maybe say how the poor cannot afford money, so they have to trade?

Re: How will we introduce economy?
Using an item based economy would be similar to going back to gold-standard days- you have a more stable economy (which may not be able to grow so fast), except that villagers can be exploited for infinite emeralds. Obviously, the way to circumvent this would be to disable villagers from trading, which I believe will happen sooner or later.
However, I worry that the economy will take a while to get started. As a result, we might have to provide new players with some emeralds- except that once the server gets going etc., inflation might prove to be a problem (depending on how many "hardcore") players there are.
Bartering is a possibility, but I don't know any plug-ins that handle that, and doing it physically is something that happens anyways. Have IGN currency explicitly for donating can be circumvented by just calling it "donator money", and not as special currency. Anyways, you wouldn't be able to buy items with donator money, right?

There will be a trading system, so in a way it would be bartering. You could trade item for item, though emeralds would be a more consistent way of determining an item's value.
Donator currency would be used to buy premium things ("pay to pretty" stuff.. or the infiltrator)

Maybe gold nuggets as a currency, but there will still be bartering .

Re: How will we introduce economy?
1notten, we've already chosen emeralds, and they are preferable over gold nuggets for several reasons.
1. Gold nuggets can be crafted from gold, which is much more commonly found, meaning larger inflation.
2. Gold nuggets can be farmed from zombie pigmen, and AFK farming to get loads of money is not the way you should be able to earn it.
3. Gold nuggets are inherently worth less because of previous 2 reasons, so more would have to be carried to be able to trade for the same amount.
4. Gold nuggets are used in crafting, while emeralds aren't really (if you exclude beacons). This means that people will be forced to used currency to make stuff, which doesn't make sense and is a potential strain on money for non-miners/farmers.

Re: How will we introduce economy?
I believe we should stick to emeralds as currency for the time being.
Should we give emeralds to players when they first join the server (16 emeralds or something)? Otherwise it would take too long for players to find emeralds and begin engaging in trade.
